THEY PARKED on the sea front at Ventnor and shivered the short distance to the Ale & Oyster.

Jeff peered in the window. “They’re already here.”

“Liam’s always on time.” Cameron pushed open the door. “You were the one who made us late.”

“I did not!” Jeff said indignantly, his voice loud enough to attract the attention of some of the diners.

Cameron raised his eyebrow, and Jeff flushed. An hour ago he’d been head down and arse up, begging Cameron to fuck him. He followed Cameron over to Liam and Sam’s table, his cheeks heated.

Sam’s lips twitched as they sat down. “Should we ask what that was all about?”

“Timekeeping,” Cameron said. “I told Jeff it was his fault we were late.”

“Do not ask what we were doing,” Jeff said firmly.

Liam snickered. “From the color of your cheeks, we don’t need to.”

“We’re never late,” Sam said.

Liam choked as he took a drink of water. “That’s bullshit,” he spluttered. “Once you start reading, I can never get you out of your books.”

Jeff smiled at Sam. “You like reading?”

Cameron snorted. “Just wait until he tells you what he reads.”

“Don’t start,” Liam growled. “You know how Sam feels about the subject.”

Jeff looked between the three of them. “Is someone going to tell me, or do I have to play twenty questions?”

A young guy came over with the menus as Sam said, “Romance.”

“You read romance?”

“Gay romance.” Sam said it defiantly as if he was waiting for the inevitable mockery.

Jeff blinked. “Really? There is such a thing?”

“Oh yeah,” the waiter said. He’d been standing patiently to one side. “We have a local author. She sits in here most days during the winter to write.”

“Oh? Who’s that?” Sam asked.

“K.C. Wells. Have you heard of her?”

The blood drained from Sam’s face. Liam grabbed his hand anxiously. “Sam? Are you okay?”

“K.C. Wells?” Sam said faintly. “She lives on the island?”

The waiter nodded. “K.C. is friends with Jimmy and Sean.”

Cameron’s lips twitched. “I guess you’ve heard of her, then.”

“She’s one of my favorite authors.” Sam looked as if he was about to pass out.

Liam patted his arm. “Breathe, Sam, breathe.”

“I’m trying.”

The waiter chuckled. “Talk to Jimmy. He’ll be in soon. She’d love to meet one of her fans.” He waved the menus at them. “Do you want the menus now?”

“I do,” Cameron said. “I could eat a horse.”

“I’m sorry.” The waiter’s solemn tone did not match the twinkle in his eyes. “Horse is off the menu tonight.”

“That’s a real shame,” Cameron said as he played along. “I guess I’ll have to live with it.”

“I’ll give you a few minutes to find an alternative.” The waiter grinned at them and walked away.

Jeff scowled at Cameron. “You’re not going to make me cook horse, are you?”

“I think you’re safe, babe.” Cameron patted his knee. “What’re you going to eat?”

“I think I’ll have the duck.” Jeff perused the menu again. He could probably eat everything on the menu twice over.

Cameron nodded. “Sounds good to me.”

“You’re not going to turn into one of those couples who order the same things and wear the same clothes, are you?” Sam asked.
